Pendant trois heures et demie, sous la pluie battante, dans la boue et les arbres brisés d'une plantation d'hévéas appelée Long Tan, le major Harry Smith et sa compagnie dispersée de 108 soldats australiens et néo-zélandais, jeunes et pour la plupart inexpérimentés, se battent pour leur vie, retenant une force ennemie écrasante de 2 500 soldats endurcis par la guerre, les Vietnamiens et les Nord-Vietnamiens. Leurs munitions étant épuisées, leurs pertes s'accumulant et l'ennemi rassemblé pour un assaut final, chaque homme commence à chercher la force de vaincre un avenir incertain avec honneur, décence et courage.
